On this day in Lewis & Clark history...

The Expedition is delayed by thick fog before heading down the Columbia River. They set up camp on a sandy beach across from the mouth of the Sandy River. The Captains explore a large island presently named Government Island.

This island is 3 ½ miles long, has rocks at the upper point, Some timber borders of this Island in the middle open and ponney we landed on the North Side of this Dimond Island and Encamped...
