The day is clear and pleasant, and the men load the pirogues so that they can leave Fort Mandan tomorrow. Gass ponders the fate of his journal and reflects on a winter spent with the company of Mandan women.

Friday 5th April 1805.
clear and pleasant. we Sorted all our loading and divided a proportion of each Sort for each perogue, and loaded all the perogues and got ready for a Start, on our Journey.
