On this day in Lewis & Clark history...
To ready the canoes for their upcoming voyage up the Missouri, their long cracks are filled and sealed. The men attribute these cracks from the trees being blown in the wind while they were growing.

28th of March Friday 1805
[March 27, 1805]
had all the canoes corked pitched & tirred [tarred] in and on the cracks and windshake which is universially in the Cotton wood
