On this day in Lewis & Clark history...
All the men work to free the boats from the river ice. The white pirogue is freed and nearly one other. The father of the Mandan boy who had severe frostbite many days ago was taken home in a sled.
From the journals...
Saturday 23nd Feby. 1805.
all the party employed cutting the Ice away from round the 2 perogues. towards evening by hard cutting with the water up within an Inch of filling it. Started it loose with pryzes and pulled it out on the Ice & turned on its Side. loosed the Ice from round the other.
