On this day in Lewis & Clark history...

Today is cold and windy at Fort Mandan across from the Knife River Mandan villages. A Minnetaree brings in corn to have a war axe made by the blacksmiths. The Captains talk him out of his proposal to fight the Sioux and Arikara.

a war Chief of the Me ne tar ras Came with Some Corn    requested to have a War hatchet made, & requested to be allowed to go to war against the Souis & Ricarres who had Killed a mandan Some time past— we refused, and gave reassons, which he verry readily assented to, and promised to open his ears to all we Said
