After a cold night with freezing rain, the morning brings snow. The Expedition continues a few miles up the Missouri River near present Bismarck, North Dakota. They pass a place where the Indian Sun Dance ceremony is performed.

I saw a Single tree in the open Plains which the Mandans formerly paid great Devotion to run Cords thro their flesh & tie themselves to the tree to make them brave
