On this day in Lewis & Clark history...

The Expedition sets out early, but must drop back three miles and take a different channel. Several Indians on the shore ask them to stop. After 12 miles, they camp on a Missouri River sandbar near present Forest City, South Dakota.

the Wind blew all night from the N W. Some rain    we were obliged to drop down 3 miles to get a Channel Sufficient Deep to pass
