On this day in Lewis & Clark history...

The boats continue 30 miles stopping after rounding the bend at Lower Brule. Clark finds the portage is only 2000 yards long, but the numerous prickly pears nearly 'ruin' his feet. R. Field kills their first female pronghorn specimen.

I went out to examine the portage which I found quit Short 2000 yards only, the Prarie below & Sides of the hills containing great quantites of the Prickly Piar which nearly ruind my feet
