On this day in Lewis & Clark history...

With a south wind, the Expedition continues 20 miles up the Missouri stopping southeast of present of Vermillion, South Dakota. They hold an election for a sergeant to replace Charles Floyd, and Patrick Gass receives the most votes.

this (1) Bluff Contained alum, Copperas, Cobalt, Pyrites; a alum rock Soft & Sand Stone. Capt. Lewis in proveing the quality of those minerals was near poisoning himself by the fumes & task of the Cabalt which had the appearance of Soft Isonglass— Copperas & alum is verry pure
