While at their winter quarters across from St. Louis, Lewis is in Cahokia on business and Captain Stoddard sends a message to Clark that he has several potential recruits for the expedition.

Cap L. allso sent me a Letter from Capt. Amos Stoddard which mentions his aptnt. to the Comd. of upper Louisiane, & to take possession of St Louis &c.
